Life is Meant to be Enjoyed

For some reason this quote really stuck out to me when I first saw it. So much so that I printed it out and have it hanging right next to my monitor at work. I read it many times a day in fact. Of course, I love my life. I AM enjoying my life. But there are days- or maybe even just hours- when I am over it. Whether it’s a tough day at work, or the stress of homework, or constantly cleaning up messes- I forget that the whole point of life is to ENJOY it!

I don’t know about you, but when I see a good quote that really speaks to me, I literally just sit in the moment and really think about what it means. To me, these are not just words. Were we born just so we could “get thru” the day? Are we here so we can manage, get by, or just deal with life? Absolutely not! Inevitably, there will be hard times for all of us. And in those times we may just need try to just get by. But life as a whole should be LIVED and ENJOYED.

Everyone has different ways of enjoying life. And I think when you realize that you’re just enduring it, then it’s time to make a change. Why would we want to stick with something we’re not enjoying? One reason is fear. You may remember my blog post about my fear of starting a blog. I was nervous about what people would think and could I actually do it. Was I going to be able to get anyone to follow me or would this just be a big failure. I can honestly say, I love blogging. It has lit a spark in me and I am really enjoying it. I hope that you are enjoying it too!

Sunshine Blogger Award!

I have some awesome news, dear readers! It has been an incredible week for my blog and I want to share it with you.

First…. I am so excited! My little blog is getting noticed! This is exactly what I have been hoping for. It is really hard starting out a blog, asking (begging) people to read it and share it with others. It takes a lot of time and energy to write, learn, follow other bloggers and continue to promote. It seems to be paying off because I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award! I was nominated by Erin Ruscel at A Beautiful Life, The Journey and am so thankful! You really should check out her blog too!

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to bloggers who are creative, positive and inspiring. Once nominated the blogger is required to write a post in which they:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated them and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who nominated them.
  3. Nominate 11 other blogs and give them 11 new questions to answer.
  4. Notify your nominees and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post.

Kate Answers Questions

Why did you start your blog? What do you want others to get from reading your blog?

The honest truth about why I started my blog is because I was at my wits end with my full time job and hoped that I could monetize it and eventually quit my job. I knew it would (and still will) take time, but I had to start somewhere. Now, I blog because I love it. I have learned SO MUCH about blogging, and how to create a blog and I continue to learn every day. Blogging has sparked something in me and I just love learning more about how to make my blog better.

I hope that people find my blog entertaining and it makes people think about things differently than they do today.

If you had to give your personality a color, what color would that be and why?

Gosh, this is a tough one! There are times when I would say dark gray or black- but that is typically on Monday mornings. (I’m working on that!) But most of the time I would probably say orange. I have been told by people that I have a fun, happy personality. I try!

Do you have pets? Are you a dog or cat person?<

I have a dog named Burt and a turtle named Dynothunder! My son named him. Burt is a Boston terrier and was a rescue. He drives us a little bonkers when he pulls over the trash and makes a GIANT mess in our kitchen, but otherwise he is a wonderful, sweet boy. Dyno is.. well, he’s a turtle. He is sweet and funny. Every single time I feed him, he freaks out and hides in his shell. After all these years, I still startle him!I am most certainly NOT a cat person. I wouldn’t mind cats but I am allergic, so I have to steer clear.

Tell me a little bit about your family?

I am married and we have a 9 year old son. We live in Castle Rock, Colorado (about 30 minutes south of Denver) We moved from Southern California in 2006 and just love it here. In our free time we love to camp, ski, travel and do house projects.

What is your favorite drink?

Funny question- it depends on the time of day. Coffee in the morning. Diet Coke in the afternoon. Chardonnay at night! Healthy, huh?

NORDSTROM - Shop the Anniversary Sale through August 6
If you could give one piece of advice to a new blogger what would it be and why?

I actually would give 2 pieces of advice. First- you will see ALL of these posts about how bloggers can make thousands of dollars on their blog in the first few months. That MAY be true for very few people, but it is NOT the norm. It is going to take time.

Secondly- when you are overwhelmed with learning the ins and outs of blogging and you do not know what to do next, just write another blog post. Your blog will never go anywhere if you don’t have content.

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

I think my favorite thing about myself is my desire to help others. I love helping people find a solution to whatever problem they are having. I like to make others happy and try to go out of my way to do that.

If you had to choose one meal for your last meal, what would it be and why?

Carbs, Carbs and MORE CARBS! I’d eat buttered noodles with Parmesan cheese. Then I’d have a huge handful of goldfish crackers. And then probably some pickled beets. I love beets!

What are some of your hobbies other than blogging?

I love to hang out with my friends, have people over for dinner and I LOVE Orange Theory Fitness! I work out there about 4 times a week and it’s a killer workout! I also love to go skiing in the winter and camping in the summer.

Did you have someone help you when you first began blogging? If so, who?

I did join a blogger group in the beginning which was helpful. But I feel like I spent HOURS studying how to create a blog. It was (still is) a lot of trial and error. Facebook, Pinterest, and just Googling things were very helpful ways to find answers to my questions.

What is one of your dreams?

Interesting question… I’m really not sure. I guess my dream is that my blog gets big enough and popular enough that it would be my full time job. I would love to be able to just write about things that I love, places I travel, and beautiful quotes and not have to also work full time.

Our First Quick Quote!

Sit back and read that again…..

Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. This resonates with me so much because of the doubt I felt- and still feel- about becoming a blogger. I remember a few months ago when I told people I wanted to be a blogger and I was really nervous about their reactions. Would they think this was a lame idea? Would they say they were excited, but in the back of their mind wonder what I was thinking? Would I annoy them with all my social media posts? I asked myself so many questions. But I was also VERY excited about it. I realized that being a successful blogger does not mean that everyone in the world has to subscribe or like my blog- (tho wouldn’t that be great?).

Once I got started, the doubt I had mostly disappeared because I was so involved with learning everything about blogging. Now, 3 months in, I do have some doubts; how can I keep this up? Will people get sick of reading this? Am I annoying people with my emails? What if I can’t think of something to write? But then I take a deep breath, walk away and remember this is not a race. I knew when I started this blog that my ultimate goal was to be able to make a good enough income to be able to leave my regular 9-5 job. I also knew that was not going to happen in a few months.

What are some things you are doubting right now? What is the worst that can happen if you fail? For me, if I fail it is because I quit. And I do not plan to quit. I am loving this way too much! And I hope you are too!

Lastly, I am really trying to build my following on social media. If you have any of these social media sites, would you please follow me? Pinterest Facebook  Instagram

I Have Been A Blogger for 2 Months!

It is hard to believe I have been a “Blogger” for two months! Sometimes I feel like it has been 2 years! And then I realize how much I am still learning and it still feels very new.

Over the past 2 months, I have learned SO MUCH! I think I will probably not stop learning since things are always changing with social media. Trying to keep up with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest is a lot! Oh, and then I also need to continue to write posts! Haha! I will tell you this though, I am LOVING this! I feel like there was a part of me that was asleep and doing this has woken me up!

Here are some things I have accomplished or learned over these past 2 months:

  • I have written 29 posts!
  • I created a Facebook page for my blog and just gotten my 200th follower! (thank you!!)
  • Moved my Pinterest page from personal to business
  • Subscribed to Tailwind and learned how to schedule my pins on Pinterest
  • Scheduled over 75 pins for the months of June and July
  • My average daily impressions on Pinterest has risen over 1000%! (yes, THOUSAND!)
  • My average daily viewers in Pinterest has risen over 2000%!!!
  • Created a “Tribe” on Tailwind which is a group of people who pin each other’s posts
  • Posted my first Guest Post
  • Sent out two newsletters
  • Learned MailChimp, Tailwind, Canva, and a bit about Affiliate Marketing
  • Joined many Facebook blogging groups

Here are my goals for July:

  • WRITE MORE! My goal is 3-4 posts a week. I have noticed I get anxious if I don’t have at least one post in my drafts.
  • Find more of a niche- I feel like my posts are all over the place and need more focus
  • Work on my Pinterest pictures. They need to look better and more fresh
  • Gain more subscribers. Currently I am at 31. Want to help? Just share this on you social media pages! Would love to get to 40 in July!
  • Add 50 more Facebook likes- bringing me to 250
  • Customize my newsletters so they look more professional
  • Get a higher following in my Tailwind tribe
  • Organize myself better. Pick days and times to send posts and be on Social Media. Currently I’m all over the place and working on my blog at all hours of the day/night.
  • Have a better understanding of Google Analytics

I am a Social Media Idiot!

I’ve been using social media since the MySpace days. (By the way, did you know it’s still around? I just figured that out) I didn’t really know what I was doing back then; just copying and pasting things I thought were funny on my friends “wall”. Then, along with the rest of the world, I moved over to Facebook many years ago. I thought I was a Facebook pro. I knew how to do it, how to post funny things, or a picture of my dinner , or a new house project, or just complain about how hard my day was. But once I started this blog and created my own “Page” (not to be confused with my personal “wall”), I realized just how lost I am. Each day my brain hurts because I’m learning so much! And I am realizing it’s taking me HOURS to learn one or two things. Oh Facebook, don’t be so secretive. Just tell me what I need to do to boost my posts and get more people to “like” my page! You are making me feel very old.

Speaking of feeling old, HOW THE HECK DO YOU USE TWITTER?! I mean, I know how to tweet (I think). I know where the “retweet” button is, but I’m not sure why I should click on it. And when I do, what do I add to the tweet? How does this help me? How do I help others who are in a similar situation as me? And who can keep up with how many tweets there are? It never stops! Twitter- you make me feel so dumb! And man, what a TIME SUCK! But, people love it, so it’s obviously my problem!

Now, let’s talk about Pinterest. You guys- EVERYONE CAN PIN! And I would bet you all have a Pinterest board- even the men reading this! But moving from a personal Pinterest page where I posted pictures of food, holiday ideas, and cute hairstyles for years- to a business page is a nightmare! And it shouldn’t be! Apparently, I have to add the Yoast SEO plug in to my blog (ya, I don’t know what that is either), then go to the social tab and check “Add open graph meta data” (????????????) and then plug some new URL into my blog at the “header” page. *Mind Blown*. I have been putting this off for a while now because I just do not understand what the heck I am doing! All the blog posts I read tell me how “easy” this is. “There are no tricks to this” they say. But they also say that Pinterest is the way to boost my blog and get followers. They swear by it. And THAT IS STRESSING ME OUT! It can’t be that hard, can it?

Presently I Am…

· VERY excited about the upcoming 3 day weekend. Sometimes I think that life is just way too busy and I need a break! Then, I remind myself that my life is super busy with mostly fun things, so I’m not complaining. But I will say, it’s very nice to have a weekend with NO PLANS! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a list of things I want to get done, but its house stuff that’s been put off. I’m super excited. I see yard work and BBQ’s in my near future!

· Trying to figure out how my son got so old! He’s almost 9 and today is his last day of 3rd grade! How did this happen? I remember being pregnant and giving birth and watching him learn to roll over, crawl, walk, etc.. And now he’s going to be a 4th grader in a few months! ARGH!

My little baby!

· Ready for the pool to open! The weather in this state is so crazy. We had snow last weekend and now it’s in the 80’s. We’ve got the windows open, the whole house fan on and I’m complaining that it’s hot! I’m not bathing suit ready- that’s for sure. But I’m ready for some pool time!
· Absolutely in LOVE with these shoes. I mean SERIOUSLY IN LOVE. I saw them on some Facebook ad and knew I had to have them. My mom got them for me for my birthday and I just stare at them! I haven’t worn them yet, as I’m not 100% they will be comfortable for an all-day wear yet, so I’m waiting for the right time to bust them out. Hoping that will be soon!
· Thinking about the blog post I made about doing good deeds and realizing I SUCK! I haven’t done any really good deeds since I posted that. What is wrong with me? I know I’m a good person- but I really want to start going out of my way to be better. Time to get on that!
· Second guessing this blog thing. I was so confident and sure when I started, but now I’m 30 days in and feeling overwhelmed. I realize this is all new and I’m still learning, but as I’ve mentioned, I’m not a patient person. I want this to happen NOW! I’d love to hear some suggestions on how to get some more people to subscribe!

Moving forward…

Learning to Blog

Learning how to blog has been a ton of fun and also A LOT of work! If you’re going to create a blog just for friends and family (as I have done), it’s not too tough. You write when you want and don’t need to be all that creative unless you want to. But writing this blog is a whole different animal. Here’s why:

Trying to figure out what to write!

· Honestly, I wrack my brain daily wondering what you’d want to hear from me, if anything. It’s easy to wonder if you really want to read anything that I write. But then I remind myself that I can do this. I just need to continue to be creative and find some entertaining things to keep you interested! If you have any ideas, let me know!

Getting people to subscribe!

· I realize that I’m overwhelming everyone’s social media pages but there is a reason for it. If I don’t post, you’ll forget about my blog. And I don’t want that! And also, how great would it be if you shared my post on your wall? 😜

Learning how to actually CREATE the blog!

· Like.. domain names, widgets, banners, and plug ins and dashboards and where to position things on the blog so you see them. This has been a huge learning experience for me and I love it! I was so proud when I figured out how to install and plug in and place my widget. (That’s a sentence that I never thought I’d say)

Finding the Time!

· Believe it or not, blogging is very time consuming. It’s not just writing posts. It’s rearranging, it’s trying new things and failing and then trying to figure out how to get it back the way it was. It’s adding links to the posts. And let’s remember I have a full time job and I’m a mom!

Advertising!

· It’s no secret that I created this blog in hopes of one day monetize it. So, I do want to advertise on my blog so I have to find places that want to partner with me. After that, I have to figure out how to add those advertisements to my blog! (Think HTML??) I also don’t want my blog to look cheesy and have ads all over the place.

Thankfully I’ve connected with a ton of other bloggers who are just starting up and we’re all helping and encouraging each other. I’ve loved reading blogs about all different things such as kids, parenting, travel, surviving cancer, being bipolar, losing weight and so much more. I have so much more to learn and I’m super excited about it! Hope you continue along this journey with me!

When You Don’t Know What to Write

I shouldn’t be stumped on what to write today. I’ve only been writing for a few days. I guess I’m trying to figure out what this blog is going to be all about. I don’t really think that people are going to want to read about my daily life. I want to figure out what my niche is here. I know it’s not fashion- hahah. It could be travel, parenting, blogging, working out, what goes on in my brain or many other things.
Until I figure out my niche, I suppose I’ll just keep writing about my life. I currently work for a Fortune 50 company in the Operations department. Our team supports about 70 or so sales reps. When I started with this company 5 years ago, I was in sales. I hated sales and wasn’t good at it, and I was fortunate enough to move onto the Operations team after one year. However, the past few years here have been less than ideal. I work full time, I have 3 weeks of vacation a year, I make a decent living, most of the people I work with are nice and I have great health benefits. But I am not fulfilled. I want to go home at night and feel like I’ve done something and I just don’t get that feeling. Today, I’m sitting here thinking that I could be volunteering at my son’s school right now while they dissect cow eye’s (really- that’s what they are doing in 3rd grade these days). He was so sad that I couldn’t be there.
So my hopes and prayers are that this little blog will eventually turn into a job so I can have the FREEDOM to dissect cow eye’s, go on field trips, workout at a decent hour, and do what I WANT TO DO. I feel like I’m wasting my time. I’m wasting the day away. It’s not a fun feeling.

Why Start a Blog?

This is a tough question to answer, if I’m being honest. I do already have 2 private blogs- one about my family and one that is private and personal. But why write this blog? The one that I’ll be sharing with the world and hoping that people are interested in reading.

There are a few reasons I am writing here. First, I love reading other people’s blogs. I read Living in Yellow, Rage Against the Mini Van, We are THAT Family, 100 Days of Real Food, and a few others. Not only are these all different types of blogs (clothes, food, family, religion), but the writers are all very different too. Some are really funny, some are really smart, some give great advice and some just really get me thinking. I’m trying to figure out where I fit in there. I’m a pretty deep person- I think A LOT. I wish I could turn my brain off at times. But I also think I’m a funny person at times- a smart ass if you will. And I hope to show some of that here. One thing is for sure, I wouldn’t expect to see much fashion advice in here though. Fashionable, I am not!

Another reason I want to start blogging is because there is money to be made. I am not one of those salesey people who can talk their friends into buying the latest weight loss pills, or lipstick (clothing, energy drinks, etc..). I am not asking anyone to buy one thing from me, but I am learning that just by getting people to follow and read my blog, I can make money. I have been in the corporate world for 20+ years and I am tired of it. I’m tired of the drama, the fire drills, the trying to fit my life into an hour in the morning and a few hours at night. I am tired of being told what to do and when to do it. I want to be in control of that. I never knew until now that I could be a blogger and eventually make that my job. It’s AMAZING how many people do this! And there is room for me to do it too! I wish I had known this years ago so I could be making money and also staying home with my son. But, I’ve gotta start somewhere, so here I am.

I hope you’ll follow me and enjoy what I have to say. I’d love to read your comments/suggestions!
